NEW CLASS! Teen/Adult Cuban Contemporary

NEW CLASS! Teen/Adult Cuban Contemporary

METdance presents Cuban Contemporary Class on Thursdays at METdance from 7:30-9PM!
Read more below about the class. Hope to see you there!

Cuban Contemporary - Circular Drawing Movement - A Cuban contemporary teaching method and technique created by Cuban choreographer Alexis Zanety.  This class is a combination of neoclassical and Afro-Cuban dance designed to strengthen the body by organizing phrases organically.  Class begins with stretches on the floor followed by body halves and balance exercises at the barre. Center is designed to condition major muscles and explore extremes through the use of out-of-balance turns and jumps in the diagonal. Class concludes with African phrases and choreography.

Teacher, ALEXIS ZANETY, is a contemporary choreographer and former first soloist for Cuba’s national Contemporary Dance Company. He graduated in 1989 from Escuela Profesional de Instructores de Arte in Villa Clara, Cuba and began his artistic career right after. As a First soloist (1995-2002), he worked under the direction of Eduardo Rivero Walker, Narciso Medina, Lídice Nuñez and Jan Linkens. He toured extensively around the world visiting Holland, Italy, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Aruba and Martinique. In 2002 he relocated to Mexico where he was invited by Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara to choreograph. He then performed the principal role of “Don Jose” in Carmen by choreographer Adriana Quinto and was also invited to portray the leading role in Besame Mucho (2003) produced by OCESA.  Alexis combines the information he has learned from Afro-Cuban, neoclassical, classical ballet, and Caribbean rhythms and enjoys exploring movement to Son Cubano and Cuban Rumba in his own technique called Dibujo Circular de Movimento. Most recently, he was commissioned by Compañía Nacional de Danza de Cuba to choreograph La Tercera Puerta (2011) and Retorno (2015) and in 2016 by Centro Morelense de las Artes in Mexico to choregraph Sombras y Destinos en Imágenes en Desequilibrio. He currently resides in Houston, Texas.

Miller Outdoor Theatre (map)

October 25th and November 8th at the Miller Outdoor Theatre 11AM- FREE!
November 18th at MATCH 2PM- $5-10

METdance presents "Moving Myths" captivating legends from all over the world in a magical interlude of storytelling. As traveling dancers spend a night beside a campfire, they entertain each other with breathtaking examples of mythology from their homelands to North, East, South, and West. Focusing on themes of courage, characters such as the Candle Fairy, the Rainbow Crow, and the North Wind will expose students to strong heroic ideas such as standing up to bullies, taking care of one’s family, fighting for love, and facing great danger.  The performance uses expressive movement and design to stimulate audience imagination and thought, while interactive portions of the performance will be physically engaging. Moving Myths is as much about honoring the importance of our unique cultures as it is about celebrating and sharing them together…a sentiment that mirrors METdance’s core values of inclusion and diversity.

EchoBody: This class focuses on a practice that has been developed throughout Julian's choreographic body of work, which has many iterations, but can be distilled into the term of ‘echoing’. Working individually, with partners, and as a collective as the main fulcrum of the class, different frames are introduced that shift focus to variant possibilities of movement, timing, intention, connection, and sensation. The class prioritizes the subjective body as an active and changeable compositional form and aims to challenge the mover to push beyond conventional realms of what dance is and emphasize the process of how, as way to better understanding the what.

Julian Barnett creates performances that explore the socio-political possibilities for transformation and empathy, through the lenses of choreography, philosophy, science, musicology, and the supernatural. His works have been invited throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, and since 2012, actively throughout Europe. Julian's first work Float, was acquired by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and since then, he has focused on longer, more experimental works, creating Bluemarble (Kampnagel, Hamburg), Echologue (Joyce Theater, NY), The Clean State (Sadler's Wells Finalist, London) and Sound Memory (Danspace Project, NY), amongst others. Julian performed with the Staatstheater Kassel Tanztheater under Johannes Wieland and was a founding member of his company. During that time (2002-2008), Julian was also a founding member of Larry Keigwin's company and additionally worked with Lar Lubovitch, Doug Elkins, and the Metropolitan Opera with Doug Varone. Since then, Julian has worked with Steve Paxton, Wally Cardona, Jeanine Durning, and his dear friend Takahiro Yamamoto. Julian completed his studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and the ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands.
