Adult Classes

For over 26 years, Houston Met Dance has taught students of all ages and all levels using an interdisciplinary approach to dance training, emphasizing a thorough understanding of various dance techniques while promoting self-expression and creativity. Classes are designed to enhance each student’s experience to the fullest in a welcoming and creative atmosphere. HMD values the opportunity to engage all dancers from the local dance community and beyond.

Houston Met Dance offers dance classes in an array of disciplines including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Broadway, in a variety of levels to better serve students of all backgrounds, from introductory beginners to advanced dancers.

Class levels:

  • Introductory Level - The first step in classes for those students who have never had a dance experience of any kind before.  No knowledge of dance is required.  This class is also for the student that has had dance as a child or wants a refresher class on the terminology and technique of a specific style of dance.

  • Beginning Level  - These classes are suggested for students who have attended the intro levels classes, or who have taken dance classes within the past five years.  Classes continue to work on terminology and technical execution.  Classes move at a slow pace enabling students to gain knowledge and strength in execution of the dance steps.

  • Beginning/Intermediate Level - Teachers assume students attending this class have the terminology however may still be working on the execution of the steps.  The vocabulary is expanded and the class works at a faster pace.  This class is also where steps and combinations of steps from the variations class will be broken down and worked on.

  • Open Level - These classes are suggested for students who have at least two to three years of dance training and are a mixture of levels, Beginning through Intermediate.

  • Intermediate Level classes are suggested for students who have at least three to five years of training.

Adults may start at any time during the year. Registration is conducted through our MindBody site. A link to our MindBody site is available above. HMD does not have a required uniform, but requests dance wear or exercise wear and appropriate shoes for classes.

Class Descriptions

  • Ballet: Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of methods. As students progress through each level, the vocabulary is expanded and  will become increasingly more complex and challenging.

    • Pointe:  This is a Beginning Level Class focused on the basic exercises at the barre to strengthen the feet and legs to enable students to work on pointe. Students will be screened for entry into this class by taking the Tuesday Beginning/Intermediate Level class.  Once students begin to master the exercises, the feet and legs gain strength, then the students will move to center exercises.

    • Beginning Ballet Variations:  This class gives students the opportunity to learn ballet variations.  Variations will be selected monthly and posted as a Variation Class.

  • Contemporary/ Modern: Students will engage with the defining movement concepts of modern dance including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Dancers will explore contemporary dance practices, and processes through combinations, floor work and partnering, and also in various methods of improvisation.

  • Jazz: Students will learn the defining movement concepts of jazz dance including isolations of the body, grounded musicality, improving performance quality and developing a capacity for complex rhythms and movement patterns. Classes include focus on vernacular jazz dance as well as classical jazz techniques and improvisation.
