intro adult Courses

My goal was to learn Ballet because I never took ballet as a child and always wanted to learn. It was great to finally be a ballerina.

Adult Intro Basics:

  • Our intro courses are designed to progress through the 6 weeks and are not set up to accommodate drop in or single class attendance.

  • Lessons build from class to class and are taught the same instructor every week. While subs are rare, when a sub is necessary, they are predetermined to ensure the continuity of the course.

  • The goal of our intro adult courses is the matriculation of students into our beginning level classes.

  • Space is LIMITED. There are NO REFUNDS and NO PRORATING. Your registration and payment signifies a commitment to the 6 specifically scheduled weeks.

  • You are purchasing a course of scheduled classes that runs 6 week, not a class card that you can use at will.

  • Students will not be admitted into classes if they are more than 15 minutes late.

  • HMD can not accommodate class observations, If you have never danced before this is the place to start. If you have danced before or have a regular movement practice (yoga, aerobics, martial arts etc.) and are concerned that Intro might be to slow for you, we recommend that you register for a single class at the beginning level and let the instructor know your concerns/ curiosities at the start of class. You are also encouraged to follow up with the instructor after class for additional class suggestions if desired.

If you have questions or specific concerns,

please contact classes@metdance.org before you register.

Class Levels

  • Introductory Level - The first step in classes for those students who have never had a dance experience of any kind before.  No knowledge of dance is required.  This class is also for the student that has had dance as a child or wants a refresher class on the terminology and technique of a specific style of dance.

  • Beginning Level  - These classes are suggested for students who have attended the intro levels classes, or who have taken dance classes within the past five years.  Classes continue to work on terminology and technical execution.  Classes move at a slow pace enabling students to gain knowledge and strength in execution of the dance steps.

  • Beginning/Intermediate Level - Teachers assume students attending this class have the terminology however may still be working on the execution of the steps.  The vocabulary is expanded and the class works at a faster pace.  This class is also where steps and combinations of steps from the variations class will be broken down and worked on.

  • Open Level - These classes are suggested for students who have at least two to three years of dance training and are a mixture of levels, Beginning through Intermediate.

  • Intermediate Level classes are suggested for students who have at least three to five years of training.

Class Descriptions

  • Ballet: Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of methods. As students progress through each level, the vocabulary is expanded and  will become increasingly more complex and challenging.

  • Jazz: Students will learn the defining movement concepts of jazz dance including isolations of the body, grounded musicality, improving performance quality and developing a capacity for complex rhythms and movement patterns. Classes include focus on vernacular jazz dance as well as classical jazz techniques and improvisation.

  • Contemporary/ Modern: Students will engage with the defining movement concepts of modern dance including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement.
